Christiana Uzoma’s penalty save proved the turning point as Nigeria’s Falconets produced a commanding 3–0 victory over England on Thursday to storm into the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland.
With Nigeria holding a slender first-half lead, England had the opportunity to pull level from the spot, but Falconets captain and goalkeeper Uzoma stood firm, denying Rachel Maltby and preserving Nigeria’s advantage.
That moment changed the complexion of the contest.
Tosin Rafiu had given Nigeria an eighth-minute lead, but England’s response threatened to shift the momentum before Uzoma’s intervention kept the Falconets in front.
Nigeria returned from the break with greater authority, and Janet Akekoromowei doubled the lead in the 47th minute before Mary Mamudu added a third in the 73rd minute to seal a convincing victory.
The Falconets’ defensive resilience, combined with their clinical finishing, ensured England never recovered from the penalty miss as Nigeria advanced to the last eight.
The victory also strengthens Nigeria’s campaign for a maiden U-20 Women’s World Cup title after previous runner-up finishes.
Nigeria will face the winner of the Poland-Colombia Round of 16 tie in the quarter-finals on Sunday.
