The Ondo State Government will, for the first time, officially co-host the annual Igogo Festival with the Owo Kingdom, in what many describe as a landmark move for cultural promotion in the state.
The announcement was made on Friday when the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Hon. Afolabi Adesoji, led a delegation to the palace of the Olowo of Owo, Oba Ajibade Gbadegesin Ogunoye III, who is also Chairman of the Council of Obas in Ondo State.
Adesoji said the Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa administration is committed to “a new era of inclusivity in cultural promotion,” noting that the festival will further showcase Ondo’s rich heritage and boost its tourism profile.
In his response, Oba Ogunoye hailed the partnership as “unprecedented,” praising the governor for recognizing the festival’s importance and strengthening ties between government and traditional institutions.
This year’s festival began Thursday with the Upeli procession and will climax on Monday, September 29, with a grand display at Ugha Eduma featuring Obata, Obajo, Alaja and Olisagho performances.
The commissioner’s delegation included Princess Dupe Adetuwo, Hon. Oladimeji Olanegan, Mr. Yomi Owolabi, Mr. Adeola Aderinola, and Erelu Mopelola Tomoloju.
Celebrated for centuries, the Igogo Festival remains one of Nigeria’s most colorful traditional events. With government backing, this year’s edition is expected to attract record participation and global attention.
