The Ondo State local government elections held today were characterized by serious apathy and widespread skepticism over the credibility of the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC). Reports from Akoko, Owo, Ose, and other local government areas revealed a remarkably low voter turnout, with streets largely deserted as residents chose to remain indoors.
A significant twist in the electoral process was the boycott by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the main opposition party in the state. This move, many believe, further dampened participation and highlighted concerns over the fairness of the exercise.
Governor Lucky Ayedatiwa and his deputy, Chief Olayide Adelami, cast their votes at their respective polling units. However, this did little to inspire greater voter engagement, as the majority of polling stations recorded minimal activity.
Speaking at Irun Akoko, Mr. Ademola Ikusemori, a staunch PDP member, criticized ODIEC for its alleged lack of preparedness, expressing doubts about the election’s credibility and acceptability. He attributed the low turnout to the public’s lack of confidence in the state-controlled electoral body.
Ikusemori called for the involvement of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the conduct of local government elections, arguing that such a move would ensure true autonomy and fairness in grassroots governance.
“ODIEC is an agency under the control of the APC-led government. It is difficult for people to trust such an arrangement. If INEC takes over local government elections, we can achieve true electoral autonomy and restore public trust,” Ikusemori said.
The low participation and controversies surrounding the exercise have reignited discussions on the need for electoral reforms, particularly regarding the conduct of local government elections across Nigeria.
