The Diocese of Owo, Anglican Communion, has called for calm and godly wisdom in the wake of media controversy surrounding remarks made by The Rt Revd Stephen Ayodeji Fagbemi, Bishop of Owo, during the remembrance service for the Late Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, CON.
At the service held on December 27, 2024, at the Cathedral Church of St. Andrew, Owo, Bishop Fagbemi’s remarks, directed at Hon. Timehin Adelegbe during the recognition of dignitaries, sparked heated reactions from the politician’s aides and some political figures.
In a press statement signed by the Deputy Public Relations Officer of the Diocese, Adesoye Ajayi, the Church expressed gratitude for Bishop Fagbemi’s patience and maturity in handling the situation. The statement emphasized that the Bishop’s comments were intended as constructive admonition, promoting self-reflection and growth among leaders.
“Accusations labeling the Bishop as a liar reflect a broader moral decline that the Church strives to address in our society,” the statement read, lamenting the resistance often met when leaders are urged toward accountability.
The Diocese appealed to elders within the Church with close ties to Hon. Adelegbe to encourage him to restrain his media aides from further inflammatory comments.
“We sincerely appreciate the Godly wisdom demonstrated by our esteemed father in God, Bishop Fagbemi. Despite provocations, he has upheld the principles of courageous leadership,” the statement added.
The Diocese reiterated its commitment to promoting moral rectitude and called for a more respectful discourse in addressing disagreements.
The memorial service for the late Governor Akeredolu, a key figure in Ondo State politics, was attended by numerous dignitaries and Church leaders, underscoring the significant role the Church continues to play in fostering dialogue and accountability in public leadership.
The Diocese concluded with prayers for divine favor upon Bishop Fagbemi’s episcopacy and urged all parties to reflect on the greater good of the society.
