The Warri Refining and Petrochemicals Company (WRPC) in Delta State has resumed operations, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to bolster its domestic fuel production.
This development was disclosed by the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, during a tour of the 125,000 barrels per day refinery on Monday, December 30, 2024.
Kyari commended the team for their commitment to reviving the refinery, which is a critical component of the nation’s energy infrastructure. “The resumption of operations at the Warri Refinery demonstrates our dedication to achieving self-sufficiency in petroleum products and reducing the country’s dependency on imports,” he stated.
The refinery’s return to functionality is expected to enhance the availability of refined petroleum products, stabilize market supply, and significantly reduce import costs, thereby saving foreign exchange for the country.
The tour also highlighted key upgrades undertaken at the facility to ensure optimal performance and sustainability. With WRPC back online, stakeholders are optimistic that this will contribute to economic growth and job creation in the region.
The resumption of operations comes at a time when Nigeria is intensifying its focus on revitalizing its refineries as part of the broader push for energy security and industrial development.
