In a move to strengthen the traditional institution and enhance grassroots governance, Ondo State Governor, Dr. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, on Thursday, October 30, 2025, presented brand-new vehicles to traditional rulers across the state, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to their welfare and dignity.
The official presentation ceremony, held at the Ondo State Council of Obas Secretariat, Igbatoro Road, Akure, was attended by top government officials, local government chairmen, and royal fathers from the 18 local government areas of the state.
Governor Aiyedatiwa, while addressing the gathering, described the gesture as a symbol of dignity, honour, and respect for the revered monarchs, adding that traditional rulers remain pivotal to peace, unity, and development at the grassroots.
> “All Grade ‘A’ Obas in Ondo State will go home with a Toyota Fortuner Jeep, 2025 model, while all Grade ‘B’ and ‘C’ Obas will later receive Toyota Cross Jeeps, 2025 model,”
the Governor announced.
He noted that the state government bore the huge cost as a mark of honour and recognition for the critical roles of royal fathers in promoting peace and stability within their domains.
Aiyedatiwa recalled that his administration, within its first year, had completed the long-abandoned Secretariat for royal fathers, ensuring a befitting home for the Council of Obas. He also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the regular payment of the statutory 5 per cent allocation from local government funds to the traditional institutions.
> “This presentation is not just a show of appreciation but also a reaffirmation of our administration’s promise to continue improving the welfare of our traditional rulers,” he stated.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Amidu Takuro, described the presentation as a demonstration of the governor’s appreciation of the invaluable roles played by monarchs in sustaining peace and fostering development across communities.
> “The governor has kept his word and shown once again that he holds the traditional institution in the highest esteem,” Takuro said.
Also speaking, the Chairman of Akure South Local Government and Ondo State ALGON Chairman, Dr. Gbenga Fasua, lauded the governor’s gesture, noting that it would deepen grassroots inclusivity and enhance the synergy between the government and the traditional institutions.
Fasua further praised the royal fathers for their continued support for the government, particularly during and after the last general elections, describing them as “dependable partners in governance.”
Responding on behalf of the monarchs, the Chairman of the Ondo State Council of Obas and Olowo of Owo, Oba (Dr.) Ajibade Gbadegesin Ogunoye III, commended Governor Aiyedatiwa for fulfilling his promise, describing the gesture as a reflection of genuine respect for traditional rulers.
> “This administration has demonstrated an uncommon commitment to the welfare of royal fathers. These vehicles will enhance our efficiency in discharging our duties and improve mobility for community development engagements,”
Oba Ogunoye said.
He assured the governor of the continued support and cooperation of traditional rulers in maintaining peace and driving development at the grassroots level.
The event was graced by several dignitaries, including the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Taiwo Fasoranti; Chief of Staff to the Governor, Prince Segun Omojuwa; and the NDDC Executive Director of Corporate Services, Hon. Ifedayo Abegunde, among others.
Governor Aiyedatiwa’s gesture has been widely praised as another demonstration of his administration’s inclusive governance style and commitment to fostering harmony between the government and the traditional institution in Ondo State.
