The 2025 edition of the Oba Ajibade Gbadegesin Ogunoye Sports Competition (football section), popularly known as Olowo’s Cup, received a major boost on Tuesday as its official sponsor, Hon. Ajibola Kolawole Adetula of the Oludasa Dynasty and Chairman/CEO of AfriPoint Group, donated football kits to participating schools and match officials.
The brief but colourful presentation, held at the ancient palace of Owo, formed part of activities marking the closing stages of the competition. The ceremony was graced by the Olowo of Owo, Alayeluwa Oba (Dr.) Ajibade Gbadegesin Ogunoye III, who is the chief host, alongside other eminent dignitaries and sports lovers.
The multi-sport fiesta featured football, table tennis, scrabble, ayo olopon, and the traditional epe game. It was strategically introduced to add colour and excitement to the world-famous Igogo Festival — a cultural event that draws thousands of indigenes and visitors to Owo each year.
Participants and football enthusiasts applauded the donation, describing it as a big boost for grassroots sports development. In his remarks, Oba Ogunoye praised Hon. Adetula for his passion and commitment, urging the youths to embrace sports as a pathway to talent discovery, self-development, and community progress.
The finals of the annual football fiesta, which has generated widespread excitement across secondary schools in Owo Local Government Area, will climax this week at the Sports Complex of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo.
On Wednesday, September 17, 2025, New Church Grammar School, Owo, will square off against Emure Community Grammar School, Emure-Uli, in the third-place match of the male category, while New Church Grammar School will battle Corpus Christi College in the female third-place fixture.
The grand finale comes up on Thursday, September 18, 2025, with Methodist High School, Owo, taking on Imade College, Owo, in the male championship match. In the female category, Saint Catherine Girls College, Owo, will face Methodist High School, Owo, in what promises to be a thrilling contest.
