The ancient community of Emure-Ile, headquarters of Owo North West Local Council Development Area (LCDA) in Owo Local Government of Ondo State, was thrown into jubilation on Friday, September 12, 2025, as Prince Bankole Adeyefa was installed as the new Elemure of Emure-Ile Kingdom.
The installation, which drew indigenes, dignitaries, and well-wishers from far and near, marked a historic moment for the town as the son of the late Oba Siemon Adedubaje Adeyefa ascended the revered throne of his forefathers.
The day-long event commenced with early morning traditional rites performed by the community priest in strict adherence to the customs and traditions of Emure-Ile. Prince Adeyefa was first conferred with the title of Chief Obele, a symbolic step that prepared him for the final enthronement. Later in the evening, before a sea of jubilant subjects, the community priest performed the crowning rites that formally ushered in His Royal Majesty, Oba Bankole Adeyefa, as the Elemure of Emure-Ile.
Speaking shortly after his coronation, the monarch, visibly moved by the overwhelming show of love and loyalty, expressed his gratitude to Almighty God for sparing his life to witness the historic moment. He also extended appreciation to the kingmakers, priests, chiefs, youths, and every member of the community for their unwavering support throughout the process.
Delivering his speech in the Emure-Ile Owo dialect, Oba Adeyefa assured his people that his reign would be characterized by wisdom, justice, and progressive policies. “I will work tirelessly with my chiefs, the youths, and all stakeholders to ensure peace, unity, and development in Emure-Ile. My vision is to make this kingdom a shining example for others to emulate,” he declared to loud applause from the gathering.
The installation ceremony was graced by dignitaries from various walks of life, underscoring the significance of the occasion. Among them were the Chairman of Owo North West LCDA, Hon. Alaba Ajipe; the Vice Chairman of Owo Local Government, Hon. Ibrahim Ahmmed; members of the influential Owo High Hope Club; as well as political leaders, traditional chiefs, and community associations.
Historical Significance of the Elemure Stool
The throne of the Elemure of Emure-Ile is one of the most respected traditional institutions in Owo land. For centuries, the stool has served as both a custodian of the community’s heritage and a unifying force among the people.
Emure-Ile itself occupies a strategic place in Owo’s history, being one of the oldest settlements in the area and playing a vital role in the cultural and political life of the Owo Kingdom. The Elemure throne has, over generations, produced monarchs who were not only traditional rulers but also mediators, reformers, and champions of communal progress.
The late Oba Siemon Adedubaje Adeyefa, the immediate past Elemure, was remembered for his peaceful reign and efforts to preserve the community’s traditions while embracing development. His passing created a vacuum in leadership, which has now been filled with the ascension of his son, Oba Bankole Adeyefa.
For many indigenes, the new monarch represents both continuity and renewal — continuity of a respected royal lineage and renewal of hope for greater progress under youthful and visionary leadership.
A Community’s Hope Rekindled
For the people of Emure-Ile, the installation was not just a cultural celebration but also a reaffirmation of identity and unity. The resounding beats of traditional drums, the colourful displays of dancers, and the vibrant attire of the chiefs and women groups gave the event the air of a festival.
With Oba Bankole Adeyefa’s ascension, the community looks ahead with optimism. Expectations are high that his reign will usher in greater development, stronger communal bonds, and the preservation of the town’s cherished customs and traditions.
As chants of “Kabiyesi o!” filled the air and well-wishers thronged the palace, it was clear that Emure-Ile had turned a new page in its history — a page of promise, continuity, and cultural pride.
