A flash flood early this morning rendered the Makurdi–Lafia–Abuja highway impassable, stranding travellers and forcing many to abandon their journeys. The flood struck just ahead of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s planned visit to Benue State, heightening logistical and security concerns .
Commuters report that even heavy-duty trucks cannot pass through the flooded section. Many motorists have been advised to park their vehicles safely or call off their trips. The disrupted route is a key artery into Makurdi, and its sudden closure has caused significant delays.
“The water is moving… even big vehicles cannot cross,” one stranded driver remarked. With water surging across the asphalt, authorities have not yet issued alternate routes, leaving residents and travellers waiting for updates.
This incident underscores a growing pattern: during the active rainy season, many roads in central Nigeria are now increasingly vulnerable to flooding. In late May, a different flood in Mokwa, Niger State, claimed over 200 lives and submerged thousands of homes .
State emergency services and roadway authorities are expected to evaluate the damage and determine whether detours or repairs are needed. However, no official announcements have been released yet. Commuters are urged to monitor traffic updates and avoid travelling along the affected corridor until waters recede.
